The future of innovation was announced in the New York Times today when Google and the creator of Family Guy reach a distribution and compensation deal on the web. This is really the future because now television programs will be directly shipped to cell phones, digital devices, and computers. It is the beginning of change for traditional television and cable as we know it. Convergence is happening so fast that the big corporate entities will not be able to keep up because of the web and digital devices.
The innovative part involves the distribution plan. Google will syndicate the program using its AdSense advertising system to thousands of Web sites that are predetermined to be gathering spots for the Family Guy target audience, typically young men. Instead of placing a static ad on a Web page, Google will place a “Cavalcade” video clip.
Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook welcomes Marc Andreesen of Ning and Netscape fame to the board of directors of Facebook. Facebook is about to really take off with the addition of Andreesen. This was a classic great move by Zuckerberg who needs to surround himself with the right people as Facebook changes the digital order. Andreesen, who I mentioned in my research, will provide him with the Yoda influence to counter the strong Microsoft influence on Facebook. This move will also add the innovation appeal to Facebook since this is one of Andreesen’s calling cards along with utter brillance. Remember, Netscape? Well, Andreesen was the man behind it, and many tech folks that I have interviewed say the web may have been better with Netscape running the show than IE which was bundled with Microsoft’s other products and created infamous anti-trust case where Microsoft was found to be a monopoly. This move by Zuckerberg is even more fascinating since Andreesen “reminded” Steve Ballmer of his remarks that social networking was a phase. Stay tuned!

Your car will be your hotspot starting with the 2009 Chrysler’s! I guess that means the fun and the craziness will begin this fall. Of course, it will be intended for the use of passengers in the car, but we all know what is going to happen: drivers and clever inventors will create a way for drivers to use the technology “safely.”
Video games are known to improve hand-eye coordination but can they help someone quit smoking or lose weight? Many companies are trying jump on the bandwagon of Nintendo’s Wii Fit. Video games have already proven themselves as simulators for space exploration, medical training, sports, flight simulation and the military. When is the form of edutainment going to be allowed in the one place that it is needed most: the classroom. Yes, the classroom! Yes, I am an academic and a practitioner with a Ph.D. on the subject! If this nation is truly interested in creating students who can critically analyze, utilize various technologies, collaborate with others worldwide, and measuring knowledge objectively, our educational establishment will adopt video games and other convergence technologies as teaching and assessment tools.
